Boothtown didn’t need to use the handicap to beat division higher Brighouse in an exciting handicap cup semi final.
Brighouse started brightly and scored two early tries to reduce Boothtown’s 21 point start. Boothtown then started to play, with Craig Stewart just failing to ground the ball after a good kick to the corner before the ball was worked down the line for Phil Cowling to hand off the defence to score, Paul Rawson converted. Brighouse scored their third try before Boothtown finished the half strongly with Jason Dodd knocking over a drop goal and then dribbling through to score and with Paul Rawson converting, Boothtown had the lead at half time 13-12.
In the second half Boothtown continued to take the game to Brighouse with Trent Ashton, Wayne Oakes, Adam Berry, Dave Love and Ben Mallas driving into the Brighouse forwards and they were rewarded when a Tony Smith grubber kick rebounded into Simon Farrar’s grateful hands for him to score. Another Brighouse try followed before Terriers took the game by the scruff of the neck, firstly Jamie Love scored a super try, breaking from his own half and outpacing the defence then after another Brighouse try Phil Cowling scored a deserved second try and with Paul Rawson once again converting Boothtown went into the last minute with a seven point lead. Brighouse scored off the last play of the match and the game ended with the Terriers crowd celebrating a great win.
