report:
Ovenden 30 BOOTHTOWN TERRIERS 24
RYAN HEDGES 1 TRY
SIMON FARRAR 1 TRY
ADAM BERRY 1 TRY
JASON DODD 1 TRY
PAUL RAWSON 4 GOALS
Boothtown lost this local derby match with Ovenden after opening an 18-0 lead after 10 minutes, but if a stronger ref had been appointed Boothtown would have won.
Playing up the slope Boothtown started well with Trent Ashton and Adam Berry driving well and Boothtown took the lead when Ryan Hedges pounced on his own kick through to score, Paul Rawson converted.
Ryan Hedges then offloaded in the tackle and Simon Farrar scored, once again converted by Paul Rawson. The third Terriers try in the first ten minutes came after a strong run from Jamie Love was halted then Adam Berry charged over and Paul Rawson’s conversion made it 0-18.
Boothtown continued to press but Ovenden broke and scored against the run of play and that opened the floodgates for Ovenden to run in four more tries to lead 26-18 at half time.
In the second half Boothtown ploughed into the Ovenden defence with Wayne Oakes, Dave Love and Dave Featherstone charging forward but Ovenden held firm and extended the lead when a stray pass was intercepted by Ovenden and that gave them a 12 point lead. Jason Dodd got Boothtown back in it when he gathered his own chip over race under the sticks, converted by Paul Rawson.
Then we had controversy as Jason Dodd picked up a dropped Ovenden pass to race clear but the female ref pulled him back and gave Boothtown the scrum, then rubbing salt in the wounds by apologising for making the mistake. After that Boothtown couldn’t find another score and when Adam Berry was held up over the line in the last minute Boothtown’s chance had gone.
