Cheers all round as Boothtown finally got the monkey off their back with the first win of the season against local rivals Ovenden, watched by a sizable crowd.
Boothtown applied the early pressure with Damian Hughes, Wayne Oakes and Ben Mallas all making inroads into the Ovenden defence and that laid the platform for Craig Knowles to power over for a try and that was followed by the impressive Ben Mallas who scored the second try from dummy half, both converted by Paul Rawson and Boothtown looked good with a 12-0 lead. Ovenden got back in the game with ex Terrier Paddy Dolan striding through the defence for a try and that was converted by another Terriers old boy Mark Bailey. The try of the game followed with Jason Dodd breaking from his own 20 metre line, beating the winger for pace and as the defence caught him up he changed direction to beat them to the line for a great try and make it 16-6. Just before half time another former Terrier Gary Lee took advantage of Boothtown’s generosity to score and with Mark Bailey converting, the half time score was 16-12.
The second half was a tense affair with both sides making mistakes but Boothtown stretched the lead when Ovenden dropped the ball and Craig Stewart was alert as the defence stood watching, picked up the ball and coolly rounded the fullback to score under the posts, Paul Rawson converted to give Boothtown a 10 point lead. That should have been the platform for Boothtown to pull away but mistakes were aplenty firstly gifting Ovenden an interception try, then the fourth Boothtown old boy to score points Wayne Scott scored a try, that levelled things up at 22-22 with seven minutes left. Boothtown then regrouped and found the winning score with veteran Andrew Charlesworth making the pass for Jamie Love to force his way over in the corner. Simon Farrar coolly slotted over a drop goal in the final minute to seal a very nervy win.
