The
Terriers
went to Thornhill very
much the
underdogs but came
back
to Boothtown top dogs
with a last
game of the season
win, but not without
casualties, within
the
first five minutes
of
the game two players
were sidelined with
a cut eye and a broken
leg, and veteran Andy
Charlesworth
hobbled off the pitch
with a dead leg. With
an under
strength side the Boothtown
were determined
to give fourth
in the division
a game and
did just that, with
some fantastic tackling
and
driving.
Boothtown
kept Thornhill
out
for the first 20mins
before they opened
the
scoring with a try
but
that was soon canceled
out when
the
Terriers played some
superb free flowing
rugby, passing through
several
pairs
of hands before Luke
Brown dived over to
level
the score at 4-4. Boothtown
kept up
the
pressure and moved
the
ball out wide only
for Thornhill
to
intercept and race
under the sticks
and gift them the
lead 10-4 at halftime.
Thornhill
came out of the
blocks fast in the
second half, putting
pressure on the Terriers
and increased
the lead to 16-4 with
their third
try.
As
Thornhill
looked to seal the
game they knocked
on and the ball was
scooped
up by Ryan Barnes who
raced 80yrd for a try.
Thorhill
again broke the Terriers
defence
and
crashed over out wide
to bring the score
to
20- 8. But Boothtown
came back with the
best try
of the game scored
by
youngster Paul Kemp,
he sidestepped his
winger
and outpaced the
Thornhill defence to
score under the posts,
Paul
Rawson
adding the conversion.
It
was
all
Terriers now with great
defence
by
Paddy Dolan, Paul Rawson,
and
Dean
Robertshaw keeping
Thornhill quiet, Terriers
then
moved
the ball through
several pairs of hands
before
Ryan
Barnes fed a short
ball to Wayne
Oakes who strolled
over for a try, Paul
Rawson levelling the
score at 20-20 with
the conversion.
Boothtown
took the lead for the
first time
with five minutes to
go when Wayne
Oakes smashed through
the defence
from acting half and
for the last
3 minutes Boothtown
tackled like
wild dogs to collect
the two points
at the final
whistle.
