Match
report:
(Handicap Cup,
Stags win 27-21
on handicap)
Holders Boothtown
went out at the
first hurdle in
horrendous weather
conditions at Stainland.
Stainland started
the stronger coming
down the slope and
took an early lead
with a Sam Moorhouse
try, goaled by Shaun
Whiteley.
This woke Boothtown
up but good Stags
defence kept them
at bay until the
half hour mark when
Nev Graham used
all his strength
to power over despite
the attentions of
several defenders
for an unconverted
try to cut the lead
to 6-4.
Boothtown were now
on top and after
some superb handling,
Ryan Barnes produced
a good finish in
the corner for another
unconverted try
and Terriers led
8-6.
It was then a nervy
last few minutes
of the half for
Boothtown as the
Stags had three
back to back sets
but the Terriers
held firm to lead
8-6 at half time.
The Terriers started
the second half
very strong ly,
breaking through
at regular intervals,
but the final pass
was often going
to ground with Wayne
Steel particularly
guilty on one occasion
when he couldn't
hold on with the
line begging.
Desperation was
starting to set
in now for Boothtown
until after 20 minutes
Jason Dodd produced
some nifty footwork
to go over wide
out, Paul Rawson
converting for a
handy 14-6 lead.
Another try soon
followed as good
work from the forwards
set up the position
and great vision
from Luke Brown
gave Rawson the
chance to put wingman
Luke Charlesworth
over for a great
score in the corner.
With a 12 point
lead Terriers pounded
the Stags line for
the last 15 minutes
but credit is due
to the Stags for
some fine last ditch
defending which
managed to hold
the Terriers at
bay as they hung
on for a famous
cup win.
Dan Williams led
the defensive effort
along with Douglas
Doughty and Jonathan
Holroyd.
